Wood Briquettes NZ

Wood briquettes are the modern alternative to traditional firewood — cleaner, hotter, easier to store. New Grounds Energy is a Waikato family business producing premium wood briquettes from NZ pine at our Ōtorohanga sawmill. Available on subscription delivery and at Bunnings stores nationwide.

What wood briquettes actually are

Wood briquettes (also called wood pucks, hot logs, or fire logs depending who you ask) are compressed blocks of pine. The raw material is untreated sawmill offcuts and sawdust. Under huge pressure, the heat and friction release the wood's natural lignin, which binds the briquette together — no glues, no chemicals, no fillers. Just pressed pine.

The result is a clean, uniform fuel block that holds far less moisture than firewood, burns hotter, and stores in a fraction of the space.

Why wood briquettes beat traditional firewood

  • 3x hotter — Briquettes hold more energy per kilo than seasoned firewood.
  • 1/3 the storage — Stack a winter's supply in a corner of your garage.
  • Lights every time — Always dry, no fumbling with damp logs.
  • Cleaner home — Less ash, no bark, no spiders, less mess.
  • Food-safe — Untreated pine works in pizza ovens and smokers as well as fireplaces.

Common questions about wood briquettes in NZ

Are wood briquettes safe in a wood burner?
Yes. Briquettes work in modern wood burners (Metros, Masports, Kents), open fireplaces, pizza ovens, smokers, and outdoor braziers.

Do briquettes damage chimneys?
No — they actually burn cleaner than seasoned firewood, which means less creosote build-up in your chimney over time.

How many briquettes do I need per fire?
3–5 pucks gets you a standard evening fire. Top up with a couple more if you want a longer burn.

Are wood briquettes food-safe for pizza ovens?
Ours are. Because they're 100% untreated pine with no glues or chemicals, they're safe to use in pizza ovens, smokers, and BBQs.
