Fire Logs NZ

Fire logs — the modern alternative to traditional firewood. Pressed from untreated NZ pine, they burn hotter, cleaner, and store in a fraction of the space. New Grounds Energy is a Waikato family business making fire logs at our Ōtorohanga sawmill, available on subscription delivery and at Bunnings nationwide.

What fire logs are made of

Our fire logs (also called wood pucks, wood briquettes, or hot logs depending on the brand) are compressed blocks of untreated NZ pine. The raw material is sawmill offcuts and sawdust — wood that would otherwise be wasted. Under huge pressure, the wood's natural lignin binds it into solid, uniform blocks. No glues. No chemicals. No fillers.

Why fire logs beat traditional firewood

  • 3x hotter — Compressed pine holds more energy per kilo than seasoned firewood.
  • Lights every time — Bone-dry, no waiting for moisture to burn off.
  • 1/3 the storage — Uniform blocks stack tight. A winter's supply fits in a corner.
  • Less mess — No bark, no spiders, less ash, less clean-up.
  • Food-safe — 100% untreated pine works in pizza ovens, smokers, and BBQs.

How to use fire logs

Same as firewood, just simpler. Stack 3–5 logs in your fireplace or wood burner, add a firelighter underneath, strike a match. They light first try because they're bone-dry. Top up with another log or two if you want a longer burn.

Fire logs work in modern wood burners (Metros, Masports, Kents), open fireplaces, pizza ovens, smokers, and outdoor braziers.

Common questions about fire logs

Are fire logs better than traditional firewood?
For most modern homes, yes. They light first try, burn hotter, take less storage, and produce less mess. Traditional firewood still wins on price-per-evening for households burning serious volume.

Can I use fire logs in any wood burner?
Yes. They work in modern enclosed wood burners (Metros, Masports, Kents), open fireplaces, pizza ovens, smokers, and outdoor fire pits.

Do fire logs produce ash?
Yes, but far less than firewood. A handful per fire, easily binned once a fortnight.

Are fire logs food-safe?
Ours are. Because they're 100% untreated pine with no glues or chemicals, they're safe to use in pizza ovens, smokers, and BBQs.
