New Grounds Energy is a Waikato family business producing compressed firewood at our Ōtorohanga sawmill. Delivered free across the Waikato and stocked at Bunnings stores nationwide.

How compressed firewood is made

Compressed firewood starts as untreated NZ pine — sawmill offcuts and sawdust that would otherwise be wasted. The wood is dried, then pressed under huge pressure into uniform blocks. The heat and pressure release the wood's natural lignin, which binds the block together. No glues, no chemicals, no fillers.

The result is a clean, dense fuel that burns hotter, cleaner, and longer than traditional firewood — and takes a fraction of the storage space.
