Kiln-Dried Firewood NZ

Kiln-dried firewood is the upgrade most NZ homeowners don't realise they need. New Grounds Energy is a Waikato family business producing kiln-dried pine offcuts at our Ōtorohanga sawmill — delivered free across the Waikato and stocked at Bunnings stores nationwide. This page explains what kiln-dried firewood actually is, why it beats seasoned, and how to get hold of ours.

What kiln-dried firewood actually means

Most firewood sold in NZ is "seasoned" — left in the open air to dry for 6–12 months. The catch: air-drying is inconsistent. Moisture content depends on the weather, the stacking, and how long the firewood actually sat there. Plenty of "seasoned" firewood is still well above 25% moisture when it lands on your driveway.

Kiln-dried firewood is dried in a controlled environment to a much lower, consistent moisture content (typically under 20%, often closer to 15%). That difference shows up the moment you try to light a fire — dry wood catches first try, burns hotter, and produces less smoke and less creosote in the chimney.

Why kiln-dried firewood is worth the upgrade

  • Lights every time — No moisture to boil off before the fire takes hold. Strike a match, watch it catch.
  • Burns hotter — More of the fuel goes into heat, less into evaporating water.
  • Less smoke — Easier on neighbours, easier on chimneys, easier on your lungs.
  • Less creosote build-up — Dry wood burns cleaner, which means less tar coating the inside of your flue.
  • Less weight per cubic metre — You're not paying to deliver water.

Our kiln-dried firewood

We supply bulk kiln-dried wood offcuts — untreated NZ pine, sourced directly from our Ōtorohanga sawmill and dried in our own kiln. Delivered in 5m³ or 8m³ loads.

Because we control the whole process from tree to delivery, there's no middleman, no long freight, and no inconsistency. You get the same quality every time.

Common questions about kiln-dried firewood

Is kiln-dried firewood really worth more than seasoned?
Yes — in a few ways. It lights faster, burns hotter, produces less smoke and creosote, and contains less weight in water per cubic metre. The performance difference more than justifies the price difference.

What moisture content is kiln-dried firewood at?
Typically under 20% — often closer to 15%. Seasoned firewood, by comparison, is regularly above 25% even after a year sitting in the open air.

Can I burn kiln-dried firewood in any wood burner?
Yes. Kiln-dried firewood works in modern wood burners (Metros, Masports, Kents, etc.), open fireplaces, pizza ovens, and outdoor braziers.

How should I store kiln-dried firewood?
Anywhere dry. Because it's already at a low moisture content, you don't need to leave it stacked outside to season — just keep it out of the rain. A garage, shed, or covered porch works fine.
